As Resident Services Director at The Fremont Senior Living, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community can transform senior living from a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just helpful — it’s essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.
Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, each moment strengthens relationships and helps residents feel like they belong.

From my perspective, every interaction becomes an opportunity to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and benefit from the emotional and social comfort that comes with genuine human connection.
To me, community in a senior living setting means striving toward a shared goal — unity, belonging, and purpose. We grow as one cohesive family, with each person bringing individuality, diversity, and unique experiences that enrich life across the campus.
Building connections among residents is essential. For staff and department heads, it begins with trust and rapport. When residents see us as sources of support, compassion, and solutions, it strengthens the foundation of community. Among residents, friendships create meaningful relationships that reduce loneliness, isolation, sadness, and boredom.
I encourage engagement through interactive activities, shared interests, and themed or spiritual events. When residents form friendships early, they often become more active, fulfilled, and connected.
We also strengthen our ties to the surrounding neighborhood. Through ongoing partnerships with local schools, healthcare agencies, and businesses, residents stay involved in the world around them. We highlight these partnerships on the Arrow Facebook page and feature local organizations during our Acts of Service initiatives. These efforts help residents feel connected both inside and beyond our doors.

One of my favorite ways to bring people together is through outdoor-themed events. Our summer carnival this past year created joy, laughter, and lasting memories for everyone who attended.
To help new residents feel comfortable, I make it a priority to greet them personally. I shake hands, sit with them, and take time to learn their stories. We talk about careers, families, and interests. I ensure they have event calendars and newsletters. I also pair them with another resident who can help them navigate the campus and feel at home from day one.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful moment enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Services Director at The Fremont Senior Living, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to build these connections can transform daily life — turning our building into a true home and creating memories that residents and families hold close.
By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we do more than plan events — we build a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, the connections we nurture make all the difference.
