First Impressions: Creating a Welcoming Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Wyatt Koory, Plant Operations Director

First impressions begin before someone walks through the front door. From the landscaping and building exterior to the lighting, cleanliness, and overall appearance, every detail tells a story. A well-maintained community helps residents, families, and visitors feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their surroundings.

As Plant Operations Director at The Fremont Senior Living, first impressions are one of our Plant Operations team’s top priorities. A well-maintained property is often one of the first things residents and visitors notice. When a community pays attention to the small details, it reflects a team that takes pride in its work.

That sense of care extends beyond appearance. Clean, comfortable surroundings can support residents’ well-being and create a positive environment for everyone who lives and works here.

Discover how The Fremont Senior Living creates positive first impressions through teamwork, Touch-Up Tuesday, and refreshed building entrances.

Maintaining High Standards Through Teamwork

For me, being tour-ready means paying attention to the details both inside and outside our community. A freshly cut lawn, healthy flowers, trimmed trees, and visible signage help create a welcoming entrance.

Parking lots should be free of trash and debris, while exterior lighting should be working properly. Inside, the lobby should be clean, the bistro freshly stocked, and team members dressed appropriately with name tags.

These are not standards we maintain only when expecting visitors. They are expectations we strive to meet every day.

Keeping up with paint and appearance concerns is another important part of our routine. When I identify an issue, I create a work order to track the time and materials needed.

After determining the correct paint color and supplies, I prioritize the most noticeable areas. Once those concerns are addressed, I move on to smaller imperfections.

At The Fremont, our department heads also participate in Touch-Up Tuesday. Together, we focus on a particular building, floor, or area that needs attention.

This shared effort helps us maintain the property while encouraging teamwork. It also gives department leaders an opportunity to take an active role in caring for our community.

Landscaping requires a similar approach. I evaluate plant health and appearance, starting with whether struggling plants receive enough water. If additional care will not resolve the problem, I identify what needs replacement or improvement.

Whenever possible, I handle smaller landscaping concerns myself. For larger needs, I work with our landscaping vendor to address them.

Lighting is equally important. After identifying an issue, I create a work order to track repairs, materials, and recurring concerns.

Our departments help report and address lighting issues whenever possible. Team members can assist with tasks that do not require a ladder, while Plant Operations handles work at height.

Refreshing Entrances for a Better First Impression

One of our most successful First Impressions improvements at The Fremont involved cleaning the entrances to our buildings.

Over time, grime, grease, and algae had accumulated around some entryways. Although these areas were familiar to us, the buildup affected how the entrances looked and felt.

We addressed the problem by pressure washing the affected surfaces. Removing the buildup made a noticeable difference in the overall appearance of our entrances.

The results were simple but impactful. Visitors approaching the buildings could see cleaner, fresher entryways that better reflected the care we put into our community.

This is an improvement other Plant Operations Directors can easily consider. Evaluating high-traffic entrances and addressing visible buildup can make a meaningful difference without requiring a major renovation.

For me, first impressions reflect the pride we take in our surroundings and the teamwork behind maintaining them. Every completed work order, touch-up, and landscaping improvement contributes to the experience.

By staying proactive and working together, we help ensure The Fremont remains a welcoming, well-maintained community that residents are proud to call home.
