As spring arrives, our team turns its attention to one of the most visible parts of our community: landscaping. Beautiful grounds do not happen by chance. They come from thoughtful planning, seasonal preparation, and steady attention to detail.
After winter, I take a proactive approach to refreshing our outdoor spaces. My goal is to keep them visually appealing, safe, and enjoyable for residents. As the Plant Operations Director at The Fremont Senior Living, I focus on the steps that help our community look its best each spring.
This is my first season at Fremont, so I am still learning the property’s needs. I am also refining our seasonal processes as we move through the spring refresh.

To begin planning, the Executive Director and I completed a full walk-through of the property. We identified areas that needed attention, created a list of objectives, and prioritized them by immediate needs and desired improvements.
After identifying our priorities, we met with our landscaping contractor to review the projects and obtain bids. Once we received the proposals, we evaluated them based on cost and necessity. Then, we compared those projects to our available budget.
This process helped us decide which items needed immediate attention and which could wait for a later phase. It also helped ensure we used our time and resources where they would make the greatest impact.
During spring cleaning efforts, our leadership team collaborated across multiple communities. Together, we assisted with painting projects at Township, cleaned storage areas at Castlewood, and cleaned and reassembled equipment and kitchen areas within Fremont’s Independent Living building.
These efforts improved first impressions throughout the communities. They also eased resident concerns related to Fremont’s Independent Living kitchen remodel by restoring additional dining room space. The teamwork helped reduce the workload placed on the Culinary Department during the reassembly and cleanup process.
We rely heavily on TELS to guide maintenance priorities and track projects that need completion. During larger cleanup projects, directors work together to create organized task lists. We prioritize the most critical objectives first, then move to lower-priority projects.
This approach allows us to complete work efficiently while making sure important items are not overlooked.
Some of the most common spring startup issues include debris buildup, pollen, dust on surfaces and windows, and irrigation damage from winter conditions. To stay proactive, we conduct regular property sweeps. These sweeps help remove trash and debris from all areas of the community.
We also prioritize routine window cleaning and dusting in hard-to-reach and commonly used areas.
During spring inspections, we often find broken irrigation heads and damaged irrigation lines. Our team carefully reviews all irrigation systems, documents concerns, and shares those findings with our landscaping contractors in advance.
Providing this information before spring activation helps contractors arrive prepared with the right materials. This saves both time and money.
Looking ahead to next season, we hope to increase resident involvement in the planning process. We want to gather feedback about areas of concern, improvement ideas, and landscaping preferences. Town hall discussions, questionnaires, or community surveys can help us collect this input.
Combining resident feedback with budget expectations and Arrow community standards will help us prioritize projects more effectively. It will also help us continue creating a welcoming, well-maintained environment for everyone.
It is easy to see the finished product, but real success comes from teamwork. Coordination, accountability, and pride help bring each project together. These efforts ensure The Fremont Senior Living continues to meet the standards residents expect while setting the tone for the months ahead.
