Staff Spotlight: Why We Choose Senior Living Culinary

Category: Culinary

Author: Devon Gardner, Culinary Director

Every great meal starts with someone who cares.

Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.

We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

Serving With Gratitude

As Culinary Director at The Fremont, I believe culinary in senior living is a way to give back. It means serving some of the best food we can to people who have given us some of their best years. That purpose makes the work meaningful.

Senior living dining is not only about preparing meals. It is about honoring residents through care, patience, and hospitality. Each plate is a chance to show appreciation for the lives, stories, and experiences residents bring to the community.

Residents have taught me that it is okay to slow down. They remind me to take my time and enjoy life. Those lessons are simple, but they matter.

One favorite tradition is brunch. It gives the culinary team a chance to share different cuisines residents can enjoy together. Brunch brings variety, creativity, and connection to the dining experience.

Creating Memories Through Food

Success in culinary in senior living takes a willingness to be present and patient. Residents deserve time, attention, and care. Being fully present helps make each interaction feel personal.

Patience also matters. Every resident has different preferences, memories, and needs. A strong culinary team listens closely and serves with kindness.

One meaningful moment happened when a resident sat down with me after a meal. She shared that the food had made her cry. She was not upset. The meal reminded her of being young and of her grandmother preparing some of the best meals of her life.

That moment showed how powerful food can be. A meal can bring back memories, comfort, and emotion. We are not just serving food. We are helping residents reconnect with moments that shaped their lives.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.

Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.

To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.

Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
